Craft beer guide
The best craft beer stops in Montreal
Montreal is the beating heart of Quebec craft — arguably the deepest brewing scene in Canada. It all started in 1987 with Le Cheval Blanc, the province's first modern brewpub, then exploded in 1998 when Dieu du Ciel! opened on Rue Villeneuve and gave the world Péché Mortel, still one of the most decorated imperial stouts on the planet. Today the city stacks 40+ active breweries across Plateau, Mile End, Villeray, Rosemont and Little Italy, a cooperative producer model (MABRASSERIE) that no other North American city really matches, and a bar culture — Isle de Garde, Vices & Versa, Le Saint-Bock — where the Quebec tap list runs deeper than the imports. Everything below is walkable in clusters and reachable by Metro Orange/Green.

Montreal craft beer — FAQ
Is Dieu du Ciel! really Montreal's #1?
Since 1998 on Villeneuve, yes — Péché Mortel is the Canadian craft benchmark. Isle de Garde wins on tap depth. Do both, they're a 10-min walk apart.
Can I do multiple stops in one day?
Yes. Suggested day: Reservoir mid-afternoon → Dieu du Ciel → walk to Isle de Garde → Vices & Versa on Saint-Laurent → dinner at Brouhaha.
When do Montreal brewpubs open?
Most brewpubs open 15h and close 24h-01h daily. Le Saint-Bock and Benelux go to 01h. Sundays are mellow — brewpubs open, some craft bars closed.
Is Montreal expensive for craft?
Roughly on par with Toronto, cheaper than NYC. A 16oz house pint: 8-10 CAD in brewpubs, 9-12 in craft bars. Cards everywhere.
