Beer guide
The best beer stops in Antwerp
Antwerp drinks beer the way Belgium invented it — sitting down, from the right glass, without fuss. The city gave the world De Koninck, the amber Bolleke that every local orders by hand gesture, and Seefbier, a lost Antwerp style resurrected by the Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie. Around those two breweries sits something rarer: the best cellar list in Europe at the legendary Kulminator, a craft bar (Billie's) that put Antwerp on the modern beer map, and brown cafés like Oud Arsenaal where a Duvel still costs less than a coffee elsewhere. Geography is kind: everything except the two breweries and Beerlovers is inside the walkable historic centre, between the cathedral, Kammenstraat and Stadswaag. Our order: breweries first, then the bars that matter — legends before newcomers.

A pilgrimage, not a bar. Dusty shelves, cats, handwritten lists and a cellar of vintage Belgian bottles going back decades — the deepest aged-beer list you will drink from anywhere. Service is slow by design and hours are famously unreliable; that is the price of entry. 4.0 with 1,075+ reviews.

Antwerp beer — FAQ
What beer should I order in Antwerp?
A Bolleke — De Koninck amber ale in its round glass. It is the city's signature. Then a Seefbier, the Antwerp wheat style brought back from extinction, and a De Koninck Tripel d'Anvers if you want something stronger.
Is Antwerp walkable for a beer crawl?
Yes. Eight of our ten stops are inside the historic centre, most within ten minutes of the cathedral. Only De Koninck (Mechelsesteenweg, a 15-minute tram ride) and the Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie in the north dock area need transport.
Is Kulminator really worth the detour?
For anyone who cares about aged beer, yes — the cellar holds vintages going back decades and the list runs to hundreds of bottles. But it is a slow, eccentric, cash-friendly old café with unpredictable hours: check before you walk over, arrive early, and do not be in a hurry.
How many days do I need?
Two evenings is comfortable. One day is enough for the centre bars; add a second afternoon for the De Koninck brewery visit and the Seefbier taproom.
When is the best time to go?
May to September for terraces on Stadswaag and the Grote Markt, or December for the Christmas market and dark winter beers. Note that several Antwerp cafés close on Tuesdays.
