Bangkok Craft Beer Guide: The 10 Best Breweries & Bars in Sukhumvit, Sathorn & Old Town
Bangkok is Southeast Asia's most surprising craft city. For years Thailand's 500,000-litre brewing law forced local brewers underground or abroad — Chit Beer trained a generation on Ko Kret, Devanom and Burbrit brewed across the border, Mikkeller opened Asia's flagship on Ekkamai. The 2024 progressive brewing amendment finally cracked the door open. Today the scene runs from Mikkeller Bangkok (still Asia's best 40-tap bar) and BrewDog Ploenchit to Thai heroes like Burbrit (Sukhumvit 22), Devanom, and the pilgrimage weekend at Chit Beer on Ko Kret island. Add Hair of the Dog in Phrom Phong, Craft Room on Sathorn, HAZE and Two Palms Taproom in the Old Town, and Beervana in On Nut, and Bangkok punches far above what most travellers expect. We've mapped every stop with neighbourhoods, BTS/MRT tips and what to order.

Bangkok craft beer — Frequently asked questions
What are the best craft breweries in Bangkok?
Mikkeller Bangkok (Ekkamai — 40 taps, Asia's craft flagship), BrewDog Bangkok (Ploenchit — Punk IPA + guest kegs), Burbrit Craft Beer (Sukhumvit 22 — Thailand's most-loved craft brand, 4.8 stars over 2,400 reviews) and the cult Chit Beer taproom on Ko Kret island. Devanom Brewing (Nonthaburi) is the newer Thai star. For deeper craft bars: Hair of the Dog, Craft Room Sathorn and HAZE bkk.
Is craft beer legal in Thailand?
Yes — but production was severely restricted until 2024. Thailand's old law required breweries to produce at least 500,000 litres a year, which killed most local craft ambitions. The 2024 progressive brewing amendment lowered the bar dramatically, unleashing a wave of homegrown labels. Meanwhile Thai brewers like Chit Beer, Devanom and Burbrit had already built cult brands by brewing in Cambodia or Laos and shipping back — which is why you'll still see 'brewed in ...' on some Thai craft labels.
Where is the best craft beer neighbourhood in Bangkok?
Sukhumvit is the epicentre — Mikkeller (Ekkamai), Burbrit (Soi 22), Hair of the Dog (Phrom Phong) and BrewDog (Ploenchit) form a tight BTS line. Sathorn covers Craft Room. The Old Town (Rattanakosin / Phra Nakhon) has HAZE and Two Palms Taproom for a very different backpacker-adjacent vibe. Reserve a Sunday for Ko Kret island to visit Chit Beer — bike loop + open-air taproom on the river.
How do I get to Chit Beer on Ko Kret?
Chit Beer only opens Saturday and Sunday afternoon. From central Bangkok take a taxi or Grab (about 45 min) to Wat Sanam Neua pier in Pak Kret, then the short cross-river ferry (5 THB) to Ko Kret island. Rent a bike on the island — Chit Beer is a 5-min ride from the pier. Bring cash and don't plan anything after: you'll want to stay until sunset.
What Thai craft beers should I try in Bangkok?
Anything on tap at Burbrit (their IPA and Weizen are the flagships), Chit Beer's house pale ale straight from the source, a Devanom sour or hoppy lager, and whichever Thai microbrew is on rotation at Mikkeller Bangkok or Hair of the Dog. Skip the airport Chang and Leo — the real Bangkok craft story is now poured across Sukhumvit.
