Berlin craft beer — Frequently asked questions

What is the best craft beer neighborhood in Berlin?

Friedrichshain (Hops & Barley, Straßenbräu) and Kreuzberg (Heidenpeters, Hopfenreich) are the two craft heartlands — both packed with bars within walking distance of each other. For something different, Wedding has become the experimental hub (Vagabund, Eschenbräu), while Neukölln is where the new wave lives (Berliner Berg). Prenzlauer Berg keeps the classic biergarten tradition alive at Prater.

Can you visit several Berlin breweries in one day?

Yes — Berlin's U-Bahn makes it easy. A solid one-day route: start in Kreuzberg with Heidenpeters at Markthalle Neun (lunch), walk to Hopfenreich for an afternoon flight, take the U1 to Friedrichshain for Hops & Barley, finish at Straßenbräu. That's 4 spots in 4 hours, all under €5 of transit. Add Prater Garten in summer for the biergarten experience.

Which Berlin breweries are open on Mondays?

BRLO is closed on Mondays. Berliner Berg's biergarten closes October–March; in the open season it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Reliable Monday picks: Brauhaus Lemke am Alex (12:00–23:30 on Mondays), Heidenpeters, Hops & Barley, Vagabund, Hopfenreich, Straßenbräu, Eschenbräu (from 17:00) and Prater Gaststätte, the indoor restaurant (from 17:00 Monday–Saturday). Prater's garden is on winter pause, but the restaurant remains open.

What is Berliner Weisse and where do I try the real one?

Berliner Weisse is a sour, low-alcohol wheat beer traditionally associated with Berlin; authentic versions use mixed fermentation and maturation rather than just red or green syrup. Schneeeule's salon at Ofener Str. 1 permanently closed on 30 September 2025. As of 14 October 2026 there is no public tasting-room address, even if the brand may return later. Look for authentic Berliner Weisse or mixed-fermentation beers on rotating taps at craft bars such as Hopfenreich, and in specialty bottle shops; check current availability before going.

Is the U-Bahn the best way to do a Berlin beer crawl?

Yes — Berlin is huge but the U-Bahn + S-Bahn cover every spot in this guide. Buy a Tageskarte (day pass, ~€10) and you can hop freely. Avoid driving (parking is brutal and DUI laws are strict). Cycling works in summer for the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg loop, but distances to Wedding and Neukölln are long.
