Local Breweries in Seattle: 12 Craft Beer Stops

Seattle is one of the great American beer cities — hop country is two hours east, and the Ballard Brewery District alone packs a dozen taprooms into a few walkable blocks. Add Fremont's beer gardens, Capitol Hill's bars, the industrial breweries of Georgetown and Belltown's cult-favourite Cloudburst, and you have a full week of drinking. Here are the 12 stops we'd actually do.

Our selection: the 12 craft beer stops

Breweries and brewpubs first, then craft-only bars, then the classics worth the detour. Independent operators first.

    Mon-Thu 2-10pm · Fri-Sat 12-10pm · Sun 12-9pm

The beer-nerd brewery of Seattle. Holy Mountain built its reputation on mixed-fermentation, foeder-aged and barrel-conditioned beers that hold up against anything in Belgium — plus a beautifully spare taproom in Interbay. If you only understand one Seattle brewery deeply, make it this one.

    Daily 11am-10pm

The most decorated brewery in the Ballard Brewery District — a wall of GABF and World Beer Cup medals, 20+ taps and a big family-friendly taproom. Wide range done consistently well: hazy IPAs, crisp lagers, dark beers. The natural anchor for a Ballard crawl.

    Brewery — Ballard

    1108 NW 52nd St, Seattle, WA 98107

    Daily 12-10pm

Two blocks from Reuben's and just as good — a bright taproom with a patio, food trucks parked out front, and a range built around impeccable German-influenced lagers alongside the hoppy stuff. Co-founded by a brewer with a PhD in biochemistry, and it shows in the consistency.

  5. 5. Cloudburst Brewing

2116 Western Ave, Seattle, WA 98121

    Wed 4-9pm · Thu-Fri 2-9pm · Sat-Sun 12-9pm · Mon-Tue closed

Cult favourite, right by Pike Place Market. Founded by a former Elysian brewer, Cloudburst almost never brews the same beer twice — the tap list rotates constantly, the beer names are absurd, and the hop-forward stuff is as good as any in the Pacific Northwest. Small, standing-room-ish, no food.

It's a working production brewery rather than a lounge — you order growler fills and taster pours at the counter, surrounded by kegs and forklifts. A proper pilgrimage for anyone who wants to understand local beer culture. 4.8★.

Seattle's historic Capitol Hill brewpub, brewing on East Pike since 1996. Now owned by a macro group, so it's not an independent — but the original pub still brews small pub-only batches, the food is solid and the room is a genuine piece of Seattle beer history. Worth one round, eyes open.

Seattle craft beer — Frequently asked questions

What's the best neighbourhood for craft beer in Seattle?

Ballard, without question. The Ballard Brewery District packs Reuben's Brews, Stoup, Obec, Bad Jimmy's and a dozen more taprooms into roughly ten walkable blocks north of NW Market Street. Fremont is the runner-up (Fremont Brewing's beer garden plus Brouwer's Cafe), and Capitol Hill covers the bar side of the scene.

Can I walk between Seattle breweries?

Within a neighbourhood, yes — Ballard is a proper brewery crawl on foot, and Capitol Hill stops are all within 15 minutes of each other. Between neighbourhoods you'll want the Link light rail, a bus or a rideshare: Georgetown and West Seattle are a 20-30 minute drive from downtown.

Which Seattle brewery should I visit if I only have time for one?

Fremont Brewing's Urban Beer Garden. It's the most Seattle experience you can have with a beer in hand — communal tables, free pretzels, dogs everywhere, fresh-hop beers in autumn, and the Lush IPA on tap year-round. If you want something more nerdy, make it Holy Mountain in Interbay for mixed-fermentation and barrel-aged beers.

When is the best time for a beer trip to Seattle?

Late September and early October for fresh-hop season — Yakima Valley hops arrive within hours of picking, and nearly every brewery in town pours a fresh-hop beer. Summer is best for the outdoor beer gardens; winter is quieter but the taprooms are cosy and the barrel-aged releases land.

Is Seattle expensive for craft beer?

A pint runs $7–$9 in most taprooms, $8–$11 in bars. Taprooms are the better value and often let you bring your own food. Tipping is expected — $1–$2 per beer, or 15-20% on a tab.
